The Hop Case Study: Demand Response Software for Paratransit Efficiency
Case study showing how The Hop used TripSpark demand response software to increase paratransit trips without adding drivers through same-day scheduling and real-time dispatching.
The Hop, operated by Hill Country Transit District, serves a nine-county area in Central Texas with fixed route and ADA paratransit service. Before implementation, manual Excel-based scheduling and radio dispatch created inefficiencies and limited trip capacity. After deploying TripSpark demand response software with CAD/AVL and in-vehicle Ranger consoles in 2008, the agency automated scheduling, enabled same-day trip assignment, and gained real-time vehicle visibility. Results include more runs completed with existing drivers, faster schedule creation, improved complaint resolution, and better data accuracy for performance analysis.
Same-day scheduling and electronic manifests replaced manual clipboard and Excel processes
Real-time vehicle tracking via CAD/AVL reduced reliance on radio dispatch for trip assignment
Agency increased number of paratransit runs without hiring additional drivers
Schedule building time dropped from full day to fraction of previous duration
Historical data enabled verification of vehicle speed and service performance metrics
