Tetra Pak engineers modeled the complete aseptic packaging process including carton tube deformation, liquid flow, pressure waves, and folding mechanics within a single FEA model. Using Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis, the simulation captured interactions between packaging material, fluid dynamics, and machine components that were previously verified only through late-stage physical testing. Results enabled earlier design validation for new package formats and machine upgrades.

Key takeaways

Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method modeled fluid-structure interaction in one analysis

Simulation captured tube deformation, pressure flange effects, and folding dynamics

Half-symmetry model with 220,000 elements ran in 24 hours on 8-16 processors

Analysis reduced reliance on physical prototypes for new package and machine designs

Pressure flange effectiveness was validated through with/without flange comparisons
