NSE Composites Wind Blade FEA Case Study Using Abaqus
Case study showing how NSE Composites used Abaqus FEA and bladeMesher to validate a sweep-twist wind turbine blade design for Sandia and Knight & Carver.
NSE Composites performed finite element analysis on a sweep-twist adaptive rotor blade to confirm load-shedding behavior, buckling resistance, and fatigue life. Using Abaqus and custom bladeMesher software, the team modeled composite layups from limited geometry data, validated tip deflection and torsional response, and supported physical and field testing. The analysis confirmed a 12 percent power increase without added loads.
Abaqus FEA validated sweep-twist blade twist response, deflection, and buckling under operating and extreme wind loads.
bladeMesher enabled rapid solid 3D meshing from basic planform and airfoil data for early-stage composite analysis.
Simulation matched section analysis and physical test results for tip deflection, strain, and 20-year fatigue life.
Design achieved 12 percent higher energy capture on low-wind sites with no increase in root loads or material weight.
Solid FEM provided better torsional and adhesive joint stress predictions than traditional shell element models.
