LyondellBasell replaced manual pipe system configuration with a decentralized, object-oriented process control system at its Wesseling polyethylene plant. The solution uses ProLeiT TF-FL transport logistics functions and IDS configuration tools to parameterize bunkers, switches, and paths directly from Excel or the visualization server. Existing Siemens S7-400 hardware was retained while enabling topology changes without programming devices and supporting simulation-based commissioning.

Key takeaways

20,000 parameterized transport paths managed across 700 silos without manual pipe reconfiguration

Dynamically distributed step sequence enables PC-based planning independent of control hardware mapping

Object-oriented architecture preserves existing Siemens S7-400 controllers while supporting topology changes

Decentralized operation allows plant staff to route granules to filling without central logistics intervention

Simulation of missing plant sections reduced commissioning downtime during rollout
