Baidu partnered with Flex to design and manufacture the Apollo Computing Unit, a rugged automotive-grade compute platform for Level-4 autonomous parking. The ACU processes data from cameras, ultrasonic radars, and other sensors to enable inside-out Automated Valet Parking. Production began in 2021 after 18 months of development under ISO 26262 and IATF 16949 standards.

Key takeaways

ACU enables SAE Level-4 Automated Valet Parking using only vehicle-based sensors and compute

System meets ISO 26262 functional safety and IATF 16949 quality requirements

Joint design combined enterprise compute expertise with automotive ruggedization

First-generation ACU reached mass production in 18 months despite pandemic constraints

Inside-out architecture requires no external parking infrastructure
